Practice leads to Adventure

seems like so long ago that I had this crazy idea to write a book. I painted trees and wrote. Now I have a collage animal book idea inspired by the man himself Eric Carle, the love poem that will be converted to a book, a flower book…I’ll be creatiing a book dummy for the next book. Oh gosh my heart is pounding.

First I must tie up loose ends with Wise Trees.

I have been repainting AGAIN, making sure all is the best it can be.

More spirals?

This is pretty good. BUT there”s not enough contrast in the spirals.

Maybe the tree needs texture?

Texture is all wrong?  I went back and forth. I kept editing and editing… back and forth and looking at the words for the book.

This tree needs a squirrel. Yes, hearts and all lookin good.

There’s always an artist who has everything figured out. They are living the dream and maybe even film a live sketching or painting session. The art is amazing and the artists proceeds to say, this is a mess and it isn’t perfect so I’ll clean it up in photoshop.  Ha! Perfection is false. It’s all about the process.

Go for it!

When you have an idea? Go for it! Nothing more than this past creative retreat and certainly my projects have shown me this. Working on your project helps you learn so much about yourself and about the projects you should really be doing.

Hand lettering is not for me. Yet it is!

I love these letters and the ones I recently painted as a result of my creative retreat. I love this type of lettering…Reminds me of wall art and the vintage stuff you see on old buildings. I’d like to do wall murals. Then the other day I opened up a society 6 shop and what do you know…there’s wall mural art.

I mean I painted this and I had no idea how it would turn out but I said hey universe let’s do some #HOMwork and here we are. It took lots of hand lettering to realize I like this style. Sure I need more practice and I’ll do it.

hey universe art

Working on side projects really led me to this crazy idea for a picture book. How did I start with hand lettering and end up with publishing a picture book?   I just got an idea and and went for it. I also read the book STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST. Austin Kleon has these awesome books. Austin creates with his own words and drawings. Yeah he talks about creating and sharing EVERY SINGLE DAY.

And I, well I feel like I’ve carved out the perfect spot just for me. A place where I use vibrant color, fun  objects and hand painted words and pictures to sing the only why I know how.. with paint.

Did Johnny Appleseed really wear a pan for a hat? What was it like to wander here and there for days, months and years all to plant seeds. He never gave up. I  doubt it was an easy breezy carefree journey. Why then do we give up so easily at the first sign of despair? Today I am working on a project for a wonderful cause and I hope I do well. Who am I kidding. I have tons of wonderful ideas. I’m so glad this tree is in the wise trees book.

notes:

  • the back of a bamboo brush works great as a stamp
  • a craft sponge brush too
  • oh maybe I should try using a soda cap to make a flower for my book
  • sounds good
  • anything that has a flat surface or not can be used as a stamp
  • test the paint and stamp first to get your desired texture
  • I love my color choice.
  • have nice contrast

painting trees with crayons

This past week I submerged myself in a creative retreat and the experience was SO AWESOME. I had a great time following my curiosity but things didn’t go as planned.

I made a huge mess…

but I had fun  and I do see a turtle collage art project happening here…that’s always good…

IMAG0006

and if at first I didn’t succeed I kept on trying. The part in the middle is where I  was able to paint what little I could with the melted crayons. This turned out awesome but I wonder…WAIT melting crayons are best melted in the oven.  So why did I microwave them?  I probably won’t use this tree because the lovely  texture is hard to scan.

…yup melted crayon and tempera paint

Should I keep this tree in the book? It was magic when I  painted this tree. I had to work fast too. The only problem is I didn’t like the brown trunk. Leave it to me to figure this out as I’m in a drawing class. Maybe I can cut out the leaves and paste it on a different trunk?

curiosity tree

I did and I’ll clean and remove the paper lines.

now that’s a beautiful tree

I do like the tree. This will probably be the one I go with for the book. I don’t know, this is a weird tree but I guess that’s why I love it. I saw a tree with branches like these and what a great idea for the very idea of curiosity for my book.

I have painted with crayon before

I Color with Crayons

There’s something about this new way of coloring that warms me. I  should try the eraser brush lettering technique to write this quote? Wish I had thought the color through a little more.  Let me see what I  can do…

Notes:

  • melting big crayons was easier
  • melting crayons works best in the oven
  • 275 degrees and check them every 20 seconds
  • working with crayons is super messy
  • use old brushes, wax paper and an old muffin tin
  • melt a blue crayon with a green to make your own color
  •  create awesome contrast but
  • just paint with your eye
  • use dish soap or masters soap to cover your brushes in soap before you paint for easy clean up
  • work fast and have fun

Imagine all the impossibilities that are possible.

Painting with melted crayon

The best part of painting with melted crayons is you have to work super fast! There’s no time to think. You have to paint and PAINT before the crayons dry up. I planned everything out before I melted the crayons.  There’d be two projects. I’d paint a tree and a quote. I love this idea of painting with melted crayons and wish I could work fast enough to write a quote- but that didn’t go to well. It sure was fun exploring! The other project…well a tree for the wise trees book!

Choose color

Melt the crayons and work fast.

The green melted great! The pink well not so great. Guess that means it’s time to toss these crayons. Oh but I DO HAVE AN IDEA FOR THE WHITE CRAYONS AND COME TO THINK OF IT A floral design I want to redo!

Paint

So glad I used paint brush soap to coat my brushes before I painted with them. I don’t know. I simply painted because I had to work fast.  A texture I came across on Instagram entered my mind as I kept painting. Or did I paint and realize I’d seem this before? Hope this is one of those steal like an artist moments.  Yes.  And I love this BOOK too!  This was so awesome! Doesn’t look much like a tree but in my mind it’s a beautiful sideways tree. I did see it once!

Here it is and I love it! For sure going to include this in my trees book.

Oh right I will be spending this weekend getting the pictures ready. Can’t wait to add this to my threadless shop but first I will clean it up.

Imagine all the impossibilities that are possible.
