3 Painting Projects

Exploration projects are under way and I’m about to paint a watermelon for a fun first day of summer collaboration. Life is good!

Crayon layering technique with watercolor. What a twisted idea! I’ve done this before but this time it came out awesome. I guess the trick is to add a little pressure as you draw with crayons. Then go over it with a pretty saturated watercolor wash.

Next up was the thumbprint and fingerprint flower. Now this is a color scheme I thought about. The idea is for the reader to think on what fascinates them. What are they working on right now? It’s clear what my answer is.

Last but not least is string art. I balled up the string and stamped my way all over the paper.

All of these are simple but they create beautiful art. I’ve been working on my lettering too. Oh and this tree will be part of the Live Your Story Book.

Tomorrow’s another day! Yeah. Ok, watermelon painting time.

A Wonder to Behold…

Every single object in this book is heart shaped or has some embedded heart shapes. I did some research and found some beautiful heart shapes in nature.

I had lots of ideas, even the possibility of a Desert Rose. Then I realized that I should stick with my skills.

I could paint a Desert Rose. Wait a minute. I could outline the plant with a crayon and paint a beautiful green wash over it. That would have been beautiful.

This works.

Sometimes simple is good. You are a wonder to behold. Yes it’s a simple leaf that millions of people probably overlook as they rush to school, work and urgency.

I have too. Yet I wander and wonder as often as I can. I embrace every shape and beautiful color that nature has to offer. I’ve seen leaves, a lake, a shadow, Roxy’s spots…

Every single one is a heart. A beautiful Wonder. These objects spark my curiosity and embrace my day. I believe this beauty exists in all of us.

Yeah just one of the many beautiful thoughts in my Live Your Story Book.

I can’t wait for the book to be done.

Guard your heart…

Live your life and guard your heart. Don’t let others get you down. I can’t make up my mind on how I feel. Melancholic or warm and comfortable, as if someone is extending me an invitation to explore and ….my heart’s desire.

I guess living your life involves both. This is the notion for this page in the book. Not a bad idea…no hay impossibles

How do you get better?

Some OG art…gosh I need to paint this.

People always ask this question, expecting a magical answer. They expect a cookie cutter plan. The truth is simple. Show up. Show up in every sense of the word and PLAY.

Nothing more than writing three books has helped me understand this.  That’s it , nothing fancy or crazy. Just show up with an idea. Most people show up for a few days and then give up.

I have learned to recognize resistance, Lizard Brain.

The way I see it is you can play. Immerse yourself in your idea and let that emotion pour out on the canvas.

Canvas can be a song, a book, or anything really. Yes, it’s how you say it. Yes, its how you feel.

Or, and here’s the ugly truth,  you could  edit, overthink, analyze, doubt, fear, put-off, deny, forget, lie, erase…its all the same.

My best work happens within the very first rounds. I create this idea in my mind, paint and there it is. Ok, maybe there’s a little what am I trying to convey here.

Problem is for those firsts to be awesome, lots of showing up has to happen.   I get that now.

You gotta make that story!

You gotta make that story!–the email that I literally just read. Well, not exactly but the subject line singled me out. I’ve been thinking about this dream of making money doing what I love. I love art. I love art so much, I realize teaching 1st grade at an art program school isn’t the option for me. I love kids. I love learning but that’s not my story.

SO I sat thinking about the first days of my guest teaching. What’s changed since then? I check in, give my all and CHECK OUT. I check out, go home and paint.

What exactly have I done since them? Have I been running in the same place? I have but wait…I’ve painted hundreds of times. I’ve learned to trust my ideas…

The eraser tool has become such a friend! I draw and draw.

If I make a mistake who cares. I ‘ll make it work. What a relief.

I’ve learned that one idea leads to who knows where.

I’ve got this new talk of the town collection I’m working on. I keep jotting down ideas for books and  yeah… the BEST PART OF ME IS I’M A CREATIVE WRITER. I’M A PAINTER. I love love love writing books. I had no idea how to publish a book and Wise Trees is done!

I will do the paper work to make it official and once in for all publish it. I’ve been doing a lot of writing since then and THE TIME IS NOW. NO someday I’ll wish upon a star, as Judy Garland sang. The time is now. No holding back. Back then, I lingered in someday and today I’m shouting THE TIME IS NOW. I have grown so much and I’m  excited for the future because…
