The right project

If you work on a project that isn’t for you, then it probably won’t work out.

“There’s good in all of us and I think I simply love people too much, so much that it makes me feel too fucking sad.”

I couldn’t agree more with Kurt Cobain. I  agree and so I set out to paint Kurt’s words in my own words.

IMAG0295.JPG

I kept trying to think up the words and the color, it just wasn’t happening. After three times it happened…

As soon as I uttered the thought, “Did I just waste 3 sheets of watercolor paper?”, another idea popped in my head. Let’s take the teal tempera paint and glide it across the page. Let’s do a layer upon layer technique and see what happens.

And as I glided the brush over the mess, a quote revealed itself.  I painted my words and my  idea of Kurt’s beautiful words. The texture is unexpected. I saved another art poster.

I am procrastinating the final stages of my wise trees book. It’s true I have. I admit it to you world. The bigger question is WHY? I’m afraid of what” they’ll” think. Wise Trees came to me as I was strolling through the park, just me and Roxy.  Since then I have painted many MANY trees. I have written and REWRITTEN many times.

Yeah… this tree and the color works

I Believe this book is awesome. I know it is BUT I am curious what the world will think? I keep painting and repainting trees.

I pencil in a time to register my book with the Library of Congress but have yet to do so. It’s time I know it is. There are many other books calling my name. I want and need to answer before the excitment ceases. I can eaither hold on to this book for a long time or go with what I feel and revel in that I already know that kids love my trees.

To do list

  • hand write a few pages
  • put together the book
  • digitally clean up some of the trees
  • Show my work-publish it

Go for it!

When you have an idea? Go for it! Nothing more than this past creative retreat and certainly my projects have shown me this. Working on your project helps you learn so much about yourself and about the projects you should really be doing.

Hand lettering is not for me. Yet it is!

loveinbluetemp

I love these letters and the ones I recently painted as a result of my creative retreat. I love this type of lettering…Reminds me of wall art and the vintage stuff you see on old buildings. I’d like to do wall murals. Then the other day I opened up a society 6 shop and what do you know…there’s wall mural art.

I mean I painted this and I had no idea how it would turn out but I said hey universe let’s do some #HOMwork and here we are. It took lots of hand lettering to realize I like this style. Sure I need more practice and I’ll do it.

hey universe art

Working on side projects really led me to this crazy idea for a picture book. How did I start with hand lettering and end up with publishing a picture book?   I just got an idea and and went for it. I also read the book STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST. Austin Kleon has these awesome books. Austin creates with his own words and drawings. Yeah he talks about creating and sharing EVERY SINGLE DAY.

And I, well I feel like I’ve carved out the perfect spot just for me. A place where I use vibrant color, fun  objects and hand painted words and pictures to sing the only why I know how.. with paint.

painting a purple tree…

with a cotton swab. Well I tried and it didn’t turn out well. But then it did.

I  mixed-up the right beautiful pink. Or wait I meant purple. These are purple shades but they do have some pinkness to them. I love that. I’m not one for purple purple but these are awesome.

palette looks amazing (still looking for a heart shaped one)

testing the color before I start painting. Most of these are too dark.

Purple paint swatches

Oh my …I am rolling my eyes and taking breaths. Literally I sat down with an idea; the idea for a purple tree has been on my mind. The tree I painted last week came out awesome.   Sometimes ideas have a mind of their own but, the fun is in experimenting.

First attempt notes: cotton swabs are fun to work with, need more contrast  and the green is all wrong

Second attempt notes: The tree trunk came out awesome. The texture and color with the purple was amazing. SO I had to goof it up. I started layering with a brush and a mess happened. I don’t know. I almost threw it away. Somehow I love it.

Third attempt notes: OK forget about the cotton swab and alter course. I liked where this was going until I applied too much dark.

Fourth time is the charm: I went back to the original tool,  took my time and fixed the contrast. Looking good!  The idea for this tree is that trees come in all colors and are beautiful. This is the last tree I pant for the wise trees book. Oh maybe not since I still have the book cover to work on.

Painting this purple tree was a real surprise.

Notes:

  • good lesson on if a first you don’t succeed
  • first ideas are often the best ones
  • so now I have all these cool textures that need lovin’.
  • Maybe this is the start of another book about cute animals in all different shapes and shades. Yes lets. Who knows.
  • there’s a whole world out there to explore
  • mixing acrylic with tempera works
  • don’t forget to keep that brush or cotton swab moist with paint and a little water
  • or that could be an awesome texture too
  • so in terms of mixing the more red you add the darker the purple.

Imagine all the impossibilities that are possible.

paint brush? Johnny tree…

(just going to be reviewing some of my favorite trees for the wise trees book while I make exciting changes?)

with tempera paint and a little watercolor.appletree

I’m so proud of this tree and all that it stands for. I mean Johnny Appleseed is this guy who had an awesome dream and with just one seed…just one idea he changed the world. The more I think about it the crazier it seems. He traveled by foot all over for MILES AND MLES just planting seeds. Today I can drink apple juice. Oh and I did just that the other day. In a bagel shop I bought a Martinelli’s apple juice, yes the kind that comes in a apple shaped glass. From the smile to the childhood memory to the thirst quenching on a hot spring day, I thank Johnny.  Now that I realize it every single seed I spread always made a difference. The moment I realized this oh my whole world changed. Every dream is worth exploring and walking MILES AND MILES FOR no matter how crazy it seems. I say if it sounds crazy then maybe your on to something big.

I can hardly believe that my book is near completion. I’m so proud of this book.

notes:

  • use the bottom of a round craft sponge brush to get this awesome pattern
  • imagine what happens when I find extraordinary ways to use ordinary objects
  • use tempera paint
  • used watercolor for the apples but probably should of went with tempera or acrylic
  • layer light to dark when stamping
  • as you stamp think about the story and let color tell it.
  • just stamp and see what patterns emerge ( I stamped a heart)
  • dark color for the leaves
  • choose a shape for the leaves that symbolize togetherness, earth and so much more so yes a circle seems fine
  • love your design and share it.
  • create awesome contrast (light tree trunk and beautiful vibrant color for the leaves)

Imagine all the impossibilities that are possible…I just love the thinks I think up!

watercolor and tempera

Tempera Paint, You Warm My Heart.

Okay did I just write that. Well okay why not. There I was, in high school ceramics art class. I had flashbacks of holding the clay in my hand and twisting it along the cold table and then piece by piece pinching it together to create an awesome vase- wait get back to my guest teaching. It was amazing to walk around and see everyone’s projects. What’s the story behind these projects aside from I’m just here to earn credit. I found them all to be amazing. Then the tempera paint kept calling my name.  I kept thinking paint. Oh I can practice the principle of rhythm.  Rhythm is visual movement in your piece.  I’ve got 15 minutes of free time at lunch and I’m doing this. I chose to use the element of shape and color to express rhythm with color.

Yes I felt like a kid in a candy story.  Here we go.

Didn’t have paper so OKAY I’ll use a paper towel. That’s the great part of creativity. You learn about working with what you got and make magic.

Mixed up some orange. Ooooh do I see hearts. I love this color here and feel like I should mix paint right on the canvas or should I say paper towel in this case. I SHOULD AND WILL. Add that to my calendar right now.

Here we go. I wanted to create a rhythm with the dots pattern. The emotions are happy and calm leading up to cheerful yellow…what I felt from start to finish .

Up close just look at the texture. I just painted these and no pencil sketch or anything. I really need to buy some of this paint. What a powerful example of how curiosity can lead to amazing art.

So pretty.
Not bad for a little time, tempera paint and an awesome lesson on rhythm. Wait next time I will make the E’s a little thicker.
