I am procrastinating the final stages of my wise trees book. It’s true I have. I admit it to you world. The bigger question is WHY? I’m afraid of what” they’ll” think. Wise Trees came to me as I was strolling through the park, just me and Roxy.  Since then I have painted many MANY trees. I have written and REWRITTEN many times.

Yeah… this tree and the color works

I Believe this book is awesome. I know it is BUT I am curious what the world will think? I keep painting and repainting trees.

I pencil in a time to register my book with the Library of Congress but have yet to do so. It’s time I know it is. There are many other books calling my name. I want and need to answer before the excitment ceases. I can eaither hold on to this book for a long time or go with what I feel and revel in that I already know that kids love my trees.

To do list

  • hand write a few pages
  • put together the book
  • digitally clean up some of the trees
  • Show my work-publish it

The final tree and no second guessing

I thought to replace this tree

watercolor painted tree swing

But why not keep it.  Let’s see–let me work on the writing for this.

Then theer’s this tree. Not enough WOW.

I had been out and about when there it was, the biggest tree and beautiful too. I thought,”That’s it! That has to be the final tree I paint.

With help from my drawing class I painted the form.

But now that I think of it, I like this tree too. I don’t know why I second guess myself. I have to stop doing this, otherwise I will fall in the trap of it’s not good enough. I will stop that right now.

I’ll go back and continue working on this tree. This is a big powerful tree but I need to make a few changes…

Notes:

  • I used a little too much orange when mixing the brown
  • keep working on form
  • use the clone tool to fix the left side of the tree
  • maybe I should have used a thinner brush?
  • yeah add some more leaves
  • I realize now that I focused on the image A LOT side by side as I was painting and that put pressure on me. I should have just created freely after studying the tree.
  • the color and the form of the 1st step tree is beautiful

Time to get painting.

Strong roots

I painted this tree as I uttered the words, “I’m going for it.” I went for it and this happened. Literally this experience and my art exploration really, ties in to a book about a bird who follows her curiosity. She had some idea…some plan.  Part of following your curiosity means you follow your ideas. I’m working on allowing  that full faith  experience to just run and play like a 1st grader when it’s recess time. That’s probably  the most important.

Something didn’t feel right about the design. Others on instagram liked the tree but I felt it wasn’t right so  I painted another.

notes:

  • adding a little yellow- bright yellow at that- and mixing it with brown makes the perfect sun kissed yellow for the tree trunk.
  • for the trunk I  use a combination of dry brush and wet to wet to get awesome texture
  • The more I play the more I realize that certain color and other elements show up and call themselves my style.
  • I then took and angled brush and I dabbed here and there, then layered with dark and light tones.
  • speaking of my style…this project has be learning and discovering that maybe there’s a place for me in the children’s picture book illustrations.

The trees are almost done and soon I’ll be working on layout. I’m so excited! Yeah I will be giving away some awesome zip bags to kick off my threadless shop.

Paint a pink tree with a Qtip

I have been thinking about the wise trees book and holding it in my hand. I painted and messed up, started again and repeated the process until I decided to just paint. That has allowed me to paint amazing trees.

Yes this page makes so much sense.

There you are walking along and all of a sudden there it is, a pink tree…

Notes:

  • mix-up color using tempera, acrylic and just mix the perfect pink
  • maybe use a little watercolor paint with water and mix that with the paint above so the paint isn’t as thick.
  • then test out the paint color
  • mix a little of the pink with the brown to create an awesome brown tone for the tree trunk (I did mix up an awesome pink.)
  • then use the Qtip and paint
  • just have fun and add the flowers

I am having so much fun and Earth day seems like a great time to release my book. Sounds Good,

Wise Trees Indeed

Wise trees book

So I didn’t make my Read Across America deadline BUT I was sick and still am. I am slowly recovering and something AMAZING happened. After a long LONG  week I got out my paint brushes and painted. With each stroke I felt this charge and painted an awesome tree.

Tree Notes:

  • observe a tree
  • wait a few days and recreate it from memory
  • use the shape of size 10 brush to create the leaf shapes
  • using brown and yellow watercolor for the trunk makes the perfect brown
  • use tempera paint and add the paint in layers going from light to dark

Afterward I reflected on how I felt and literally jumped up like a kid who’s just been told he’s going to Disneyland  That’s how I know that I can’t give this art up. Art is in my blood. It just is. I can’t believe how easy it was to create this beautiful tree. Four trees to go, and I will be ready to scan all of them and start putting the book together . There I go again with a smile.  I see every page and with a deep breath and a smile I know it’s going to be awesome!

Imagine all the impossibilities that are possible.

Spiral Tree

I went from this sketch   ( p.s when you’re tired of blowing your nose and your stomach hurts from coughing you don’t care about taking a perfect picture…but should I ever?)

Love Lives Here

to this painting.

Spiral tree

My goal was to create this place of mystery, growth, peace, wonder, and magic…EVERYTHING that love is.  I deviated a little thinking of details and color to express the notion of love. I have noticed that by chance…WHIMSICAL CHANCE I draw hidden hearts. The element of shape and color really helped me out here. Sometimes it’s hard to let go but you have to do that. You have to let and just paint. Eventually you have these I don’t know what that is but I love it or I don’t know what that was but I’m not doing that again.

Once again I see just how much it helps to adjust color in Afinity Pro and I should add more spirals.

Oh gosh I love the color and another awesome tree for the wise trees book.

Painting with melted crayon

The best part of painting with melted crayons is you have to work super fast! There’s no time to think. You have to paint and PAINT before the crayons dry up. I planned everything out before I melted the crayons.  There’d be two projects. I’d paint a tree and a quote. I love this idea of painting with melted crayons and wish I could work fast enough to write a quote- but that didn’t go to well. It sure was fun exploring! The other project…well a tree for the wise trees book!

Choose color

Melt the crayons and work fast.

The green melted great! The pink well not so great. Guess that means it’s time to toss these crayons. Oh but I DO HAVE AN IDEA FOR THE WHITE CRAYONS AND COME TO THINK OF IT A floral design I want to redo!

Paint

So glad I used paint brush soap to coat my brushes before I painted with them. I don’t know. I simply painted because I had to work fast.  A texture I came across on Instagram entered my mind as I kept painting. Or did I paint and realize I’d seem this before? Hope this is one of those steal like an artist moments.  Yes.  And I love this BOOK too!  This was so awesome! Doesn’t look much like a tree but in my mind it’s a beautiful sideways tree. I did see it once!

Here it is and I love it! For sure going to include this in my trees book.

Oh right I will be spending this weekend getting the pictures ready. Can’t wait to add this to my threadless shop but first I will clean it up.

Painting a tree with a sponge brush

I am so glad I MADE this awesome brush.  I saw this fantastic brush and I wanted to make one a whole lot smaller. I had this old sponge brush and a fabulous idea…LOVE WHEN THAT HAPPENS!

0823171323

I used a little yellow and green acrylic paint. Did I mix in tempera paint? I may have. All I know is I applied the paint in layers. First yellow and then green. I wanted to build up contrast and get these various tones of green. I applied paint and magic happened…this breeze and the yellow just gives it a warm carefree rhythm. I love it. Another tree for the wise trees book.

V tree

I simply had an idea and 15 minutes later it turned out BRILLIANT! More trees to paint and …WAIT A MINUTE… I should continue this mixed media exploration for the next book side project. YES I shall paint fabulous animal characters for my Ana Bee and George Bird book. Sounds like a fabulous idea. I love working on art and there’s NOTHING in the world I’d rather do and I love so much! Thank goodness for that!!
